Understanding Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention

What Is MBRP?

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) is a form of addiction recovery treatment that works to prevent relapses by practicing mindfulness meditation techniques with standard prevention techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapies. It was created by Dr. Alan Marlatt, Sarah Bowen, and Neha Chawla at the University of Washington. The treatment encourages clients to avoid hiding from their urges and simply accept them and learn to cope with them instead. Learning to cope with the urges and accept them is known as “urge surfing.”

Urge surfing is part of this prevention technique. It involves the understanding that urges are simply impulses connected to old habits. Urges can be analyzed and felt, recognizing the feelings and sensations they bring you. They don’t have to be given in to, but rather can be welcomed and felt as you ride out the feelings they give you. After twenty or thirty minutes, urges typically subside on their own. This is how urge surfing works: riding out urges and the feelings they give you until they subside without giving into them. 

How to Urge Surf

Urge surfing can be done in five simple steps. These steps are:

  1. Recognize physical sensations
  2. Focus on those sensations
  3. Focus on your breathing
  4. Focus again on your body and physical sensations
  5. Stay present in the moment, taking it all in

By staying mindful of what your body is feeling and learning how urges make you feel without giving in to them, you can work to control them and manage them successfully.
