The Power of Laughter

by on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

The 21st century boasts a plethora of new creations, be it technology, philosophies, social networks, or advancements in medicine and health. Technology exists to remind us to take the trash out, of future meetings, and to tell one’s partner they are loved. We live in a society full of stuff to increase productivity, but sometimes I forget to stop for a moment to embrace the life I live.
As a therapist, my career and life focuses on helping others create a life of happiness. But what is happiness? That’s a bigger question I dare not face today. But one of the most important aspects can easily become overlooked in my business and pursuit of progress. Patrick Carnes, the father of sex addiction recovery, tells every one of his clients about one powerful yet simple part of healing: If you cannot laugh through the recovery process, you won’t make it.
The Power of LaughterLaughter. As I write this blog, a smile crosses my face for the idea brings a warm feeling inside. When was the last time you laughed? At yourself, a situation, a movie, life circumstances, or anything else? What about the last deep belly laugh you felt throughout your entire body? Or a ‘lol’, laughing so loudly, not worried about who hears or sees you?
Laughter brings happiness, hope, and joy. Laughter stems as much from the present, as it does from the past and looking towards the future. In a simple laugh, we can embrace the moment, while trusting we will find laughter the next time it’s desired. Laughter is simple, profound, and powerful, and it is key to addiction recovery.
The feeling of this blog is lighter than many I’ve written before today. Maybe this is a reflection of my own life, where I can become bogged down in the business and productivity of the day, and I forget to enjoy the life I have. Rather than planning for a great life in 5 years, I need to remember the amazing life I’ve been blessed with today. Sometimes, I need to sit back in my chair and laugh at the ridiculousness of how I got where I am today. Where can you find laughter in your life today? How can you laugh at yourself? My challenge is simple – find a reason to laugh today – for it can bring a renewed sense of hope.
